Cisco CDP Monitor is an efficient network diagnostic and troubleshhoting tool. It is very useful for network administrator and network engineer.
At first, Cisco CDP Monitor is a CDP agent for windows host. It is able to use the CDP(Cisco Discovery Protocol) which is a private protocol and is only used in Cisco`s devices such as Cisco router, Catalyst switch and so on.
With Cisco CDP Monitor, You can send the information (CPU number and model, host name, user name and the windows version, service pack version) of your host to the connective Cisco device with CDP, and you can get and display the information from the connective Cisco device, such as device name, device model, port which is connecting with, administive ip address, IOS version, and so on. With these information, you can easily know the total topology of your network and you can easily do troubleshooting. Once the CDP information changed (maybe the link or device failed, or you changed the setup of Cisco device), Cisco CDP Monitor will detect and notify the administrator by Warning Message Box, Warning sounds, Send email and Run related program.
So Cisco CDP Monitor can monitor your network automatically . In specailly, Cisco CDP Monitor can send the information of the host to Cisco devices. So the LAN Management Solution and the Routed WAN Management Solution of CiscoWorks 2000 Campus Manager can get these information and show the total topology of your network in graphics mode, not only the Cisco network devices, but also your PC and host. You can monitor windows host in Cisco`s Network Management software.
